This film is a brilliant conspiracy thriller in the mode of a sci fi adventure. Abrams really succeeded in making the story smart and energetic as he is wont to do with his films, except for the shallow and derivative Force Awakens.

The story begins with Kirk being court marshaled and demoted for breaking the prime directive. Then he watches as his mentor Captain Pike is murdered by John Harrison, a terrorist with a grudge against Star Fleet. Harrison is hiding on the Klingon world of Qronos and Kirk is charged with hunting him down and killing him. In order to do this he is given prototype Proton Torpedoes and told to use them.

He travels to Qronos and gets into a fight with the klingons, before he is rescued by Harrison. Harrison surrenders to him and he takes him aboard the Enterprise, only to be confronted by the new Flagship, that is bigger and proportionately stronger.

Admiral Marcus tells them to hand over the fugitive, but Kirk refuses and flees. They get into a shootout and the Enterprise is crippled. Before the enemy can destroy them Scotty reveals that he has stowed aboard and sabotages their weapon systems. They need to save Scotty and stop Marcus so they fly by jet pack across the debris strewn field to reach the enemy.

They discover that Harris was formerly Khan Noonian Singh, and he was genetically engineered to be a superhuman. Starfleet is terrified of the threat that the Klingon Empire poses and enlisted Khan to build new weapons for them. He built the prototype torpedo, but placed his former crewmates in cryo stasis inside. He escaped Starfleets capture, and began terrorizing them. Marcus is now seeking to destroy him and the Enterprise to cover up his wrong doing.

Khan and co seize control of the bridge and kill Marcus, but khan overpowers them. He demands the torpedoes with his crewmates be returned to him in exchange for Kirk and Co. He gets what he want but before he can destroy the Enterprise his ships cargo bay explodes as the torpedoes he received go off.

He crashes to the planet below, while Kirk gives his life to realign the reactor core and save the lives of his crew. Spock chases Khan through the city and they battle, before Spock manages to prevail.

Khans blood has regenerative properties, and Bones gives Kirk a transfusion of Khans blood and saves his life.

I very much enjoyed the spy thriller elements in this film, as I've always wanted to see their elements incorporated well into a Star Wars film. A series like Mission Impossible would work brilliantly with the Star Wars setting. With my own Star Wars saga i tried to make use of spy thriller tropes like the assassination, genetic engineering and conspiracies.
