The Last Jedi: Redux

Updated: May 18, 2020

Since last reviewing this film I've had a change of heart. Despite its tonal flaws and cynical subversion of heroic tropes I've really come to appreciate its dramaturgy, its an intensely dramatic movie that pours on the pressure until the heroes reach a breaking point and must do or die. It puts them in a vice and doesn't stop squeezing until the very end.

The theme of heroic sacrifice pervades this film as the resistance is relentlessly worn down. Kylo Ren is a far more interesting character this time, as he shows some humanity by sparing his mother and allying with Rey. Their bond and see-sawing interplay is the highlight of the movie. Kylo is given a justification for his turn to the dark side when luke seeks to kill him during a moment of weakness.

Lukes fall from grace is dramatically optimised, as its revealed he has good reasons for doubting himself and railing against the jedi. He failed Ren, and his failure led to the destruction of everything he held dear.

The scene with Yoda where he says failure is part of being a teacher is good, and teaches Luke not to be so jaded by failure.

I still don't like the death of Luke Skywalker, but I appreciate it was the opportune moment for him to sacrifice himself.

The whole movie has such strong arcs, with Rey learning not to seek external validation for her sense of power, and Fin learning to give his life for the Resistance, and Poe learning to not solve every problem with a reckless plan.

The film reminds me very much of Game of Thrones because its so unpredictable and intensely dramatic, with seriously flawed heroes and morally grey villains. I change my rating to 7/10. A very complex and interesting film, ranking beside Revenge of the Sith in terms of overall quality.

Its also an aesthetically gorgeous film, with beautiful sets and well-composed shots and well-designed costumes. Its very much like the Prequels, which for all their flaws had beautiful visuals.
